We are searching for Latin teachers who are comfortable, even enthusiastic, with Latin as a non-elite study for inner city students who may be very deficient academically at the beginning. We use the Cambridge Latin Program, and encourage the use of spoken Latin and neo-Latin as part of the means to engage our students.
WCHS is the flagship charter high school of the Believe Charter High Schools Network. WCHS is now in its eighth year. Latin is required for three years for all students, leading to an advanced Regents Diploma. The school occupies a new eight-storey, state-of-the-art facility at 198 Varet Street in industrial East Williamsburg. Latin classes are all conducted on the "Latin floor.” All classrooms are equipped with computers, laptops, Promethean boards, and projectors. The full "Latin team" consists of eleven full-time Latin teachers in three high schools, under the direction of a Latin curriculum specialist.
WCHS is within walking distance of the L train at Morgan Avenue and, slightly further, the M trains at Flushing Avenue; and within driving distance of all boroughs, plus Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties (though traffic is very difficult). Faculty commute from all boroughs, Long Island, and New Jersey.
Salary and benefits are competitive with New York City Public Schools, but the day and the year are longer. Freshmen students are selected by lottery from applicants across the educationally-deprived and impoverished neighborhoods of northeast Brooklyn, including Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York, and Canarsie. Approximately 70% of students are native Spanish speaking; and most are two or more years behind grade level academically in reading and math.
The position is available immediately for certified teachers who have passed New York fingerprinting and background checks; or as soon thereafter for beginning or out-of-state teachers.
